Group living and nonliving things according to characteristics they share.
Notebook Foldable Shutterfold: Cut out the template. Fold anchor tabs backward and forward. Glue anchor tabs onto notebook page to form a shutterfold. Cut up the center line to form two tabs.
Find living and non-living matter around you. Discuss why it is placed into each category.
Observe the photographs on the front tabs. Under the tabs, identify shared characteristics within each group. How can all matter be classified as either living (organic) or nonliving (inorganic)?
Note that it can be difficult to understand that if something has ever been living, such as firewood, it is classified as living matter because even though it is from a dead tree it is still organic.
